Cisco

The platform under most of this record — twenty-nine years of switching, routing, wireless, firewalling, identity and compute, across five generations of each.

Product lines and other names: Catalyst, Nexus, Firepower, Meraki, ISE, ACS, Aironet, UCS, ASR, ISR, IOS

Left to right is time. Each row is one of the 19 disciplines Cisco carried, ordered so kindred disciplines sit next to each other rather than alphabetically — a landscape only means anything if neighboring rows belong together. Height is the work running in that domain in that year, weighted by what failure would have cost — life-safety ×3, a statutory obligation ×2.2, the estate itself ×1.5, an evaluation ×1. Every project declares which of those it was, so each ridge traces to an entry you can open and disagree with. Only the work that named this manufacturer is counted, so this is the shape of what it carried rather than of the record around it. Height and color are on the record-wide scale rather than this page’s own, so a modest estate draws a modest landscape and any two of these pages can be read against each other.

The spine. It runs from the first switches at StorComm in the late nineties, through the CCIE earned on it in 2002, through nineteen years of a city estate built on Catalyst, into a consulting portfolio where it was the platform in front of nearly every client.

Switching. Catalyst 5500 and 2940 in the early estate; a 6509 and 6509-E VSS core pair with 6506 and 6504 at the internet edge; 4503 distribution; 3560, 3750, 3750G, 3750X, 3850 and 2960 through the closets; Nexus 5572UP in the data center. Later refresh cycles onto Catalyst 9000 — 9200, 9200L, 9300, 9300X, 9400 and 9500 — with stack kits and DNA licensing.

Routing and wide area. 7513 and 7206 on the utility SCADA core in 2000, LightStream ATM alongside them; ASR 9010 as the research-network core; ISR 4431 and ASR 1001-X as SD-WAN edge routers on the consulting side.

Security and identity. PIX firewalls on the SOCOM kit in 2003; ASA 5506 and 5508-X at the City; Firepower 1120, 4225 and Secure Firewall 3105 under Firepower Management Center across the client portfolio. Secure ACS through two generations — CSACS-1112 appliance, versions 4.0 to 5.3 — then ISE, then Duo multi-factor on device administration in 2023. Umbrella for content filtering after OpenDNS.

Wireless. Aironet through the City estate on 2504 and 5508 controllers, Meraki for the library refresh, Catalyst 9800-class controllers and 9100-series access points later.

Compute and storage. UCS servers, MDS storage networking, HyperFlex — including the three HX 220c M5 nodes that became the practice lab.

The through line is not brand loyalty. It is that a CCIE earned in 2002 and maintained for twenty years buys the ability to argue with the platform rather than defer to it, which is what makes the multi-vendor entries elsewhere in this list possible.

Where it appears

Declared on each entry rather than listed here, so this page cannot drift from the work it describes. What each entry named is quoted as it stands, with how much of that project rested on it and what stands behind the claim beside it. The first of those drives the height of the surface above.
