An 802.11a bridge pair spanned the two sites, with an IPsec tunnel between Cisco PIX firewalls running over the top of it — because in 2003 the radio’s own protection was not something to stake a deployment on, and the encryption belonged above the link rather than inside it.
Each end carried a router and switch, IP telephony with analogue extensions and PSTN breakout, and Tandberg video conferencing, with survivable remote site telephony so a site kept dial tone when the span went down rather than losing voice with the data. The fixed end attached to Department of Defense classified and unclassified network transport.
Delivered under Top Secret clearance at MacDill AFB, Tampa, and described here at a deliberately general level.
