webMethods Integration Server and API Gateway across three sites with a standby pair at an out-of-region disaster recovery site in Atlanta, so the integration layer itself was not a single point of failure.
The interoperability question was asked at design stage rather than at handover. A four-hour working session in September 2022 put the project architect, the interior designer, the mechanical and electrical engineers, the facility manager who would operate the building and the City’s security engineering lead in one room, against an agenda set by architecture: how all of the technology components would interact. What came out of it was a vetted technical interface matrix, worked system by system, and a weekly task list with the integration platform at item one — above the nine subsystems it was to bind. That building is also where a platform question nine years old was finally answered.
It federated nine subsystems through one bus, including voice, LENEL access control and video, HVAC, fire and emergency panels, Motorola PremierOne public safety and forensic case management — converging operational technology with IT and putting chain of custody into the architecture rather than into procedure.
Outcome
Approved and partially implemented. Chain of custody placed in the architecture rather than in procedure.
