Cellular and Carrier Connectivity

Carrier-borne connectivity for sites with no wireline option — coverage measured at the site rather than read off a carrier's map, and a gateway and antenna chosen to what was measured.

Also known as LTE Gateways, Cellular Backhaul, Carrier Coverage Analysis, Cellular Routers

Left to right is time. Each row is one of the 14 disciplines this one worked alongside, ordered so kindred disciplines sit next to each other rather than alphabetically — a landscape only means anything if neighboring rows belong together. Height is the work running in that domain in that year, weighted by what failure would have cost — life-safety ×3, a statutory obligation ×2.2, the estate itself ×1.5, an evaluation ×1. Every project declares which of those it was, so each ridge traces to an entry you can open and disagree with. Only the work that used this technology is counted, so what shows here is the company it kept rather than the record around it. Height and color are on the record-wide scale rather than this page’s own, so a modest estate draws a modest landscape and any two of these pages can be read against each other.

Carrier cellular used as the access layer where wireline does not reach: remote utility sites, unmanned industrial plant, and remote and hosted working across a modernized WAN.

A carrier’s published coverage map is drawn for a phone held by a person standing outdoors. The site that needs the connection is a gateway inside a concrete pump house at the bottom of a river valley, and the two have very little to do with each other. So coverage gets measured per site, and the gateway, carrier and antenna get selected against the measurement.

The other half is what happens when it fails. A site whose only path out is cellular has no independent way to say it has gone quiet, which is why alarm notification carried over that same path has to be assessed on its failure modes rather than its happy path.

The 2012 date is the municipal fire and rescue work, where cellular first entered a record here as its own design problem rather than as a line inside a WAN or radio entry — first as failover for fixed sites, then as the access layer for a three-hundred-vehicle fleet. The 2021 municipal water utility program is where the site-by-site measurement described above was done. Carrier relationships predate both.
