Holographic Display Evaluation

Emerging display technology assessed on a borrow-before-buy basis, closed as a zero-dollar equipment evaluation award.

Three-dimensional holographic display systems assessed for the new Medical Examiner’s Office while that building was still in architectural design — early enough that a positive finding could still change the room it would sit in.

The evaluation went to a live demonstration that put the City, the Sheriff’s Office, the state college and the school district around one machine, rather than around four separate vendor conversations. Regional bodies with overlapping interests tend to each run their own pilot and reach the same conclusion independently at four times the cost.

It closed in November 2023 as a zero-dollar equipment evaluation award: the unit arrived on loan against a signed agreement, to be proven in service before any money was committed. Buying emerging technology off a vendor demonstration is how public bodies end up owning equipment nobody uses.

Outcome

The technology was proved in service before any money was committed, rather than bought off a demonstration.
