Cisco BBSM Certification

Building Broadband Service Manager — subscriber provisioning, walled-garden capture and billing, down to custom development in its SDK and SQL schema.

BBSM was the platform that made a hotel or marina network a revenue line rather than an overhead: the guest is presented with an entry page, enters their details, is charged, and only then does the network open up.

This certification sits directly behind the Kerzner International work — Atlantis in the Bahamas and the Mexico properties — where wireless and building systems were tied into the property management system so that guest internet, and shore power and services for yachts in the marina, could be authenticated, metered and posted to a room account.

It went further than configuration on one engagement. The Rosen Hotels work in Orlando was development inside the BBSM SDK and its SQL schema — the full guest transaction from room and account validation through payment selection and card processing to posting the charge back into the property management system, with wired-to-wireless port hopping held on one session and negotiated rates honored across properties.

The same platform did the same job for cable operators. Hospitality is the more memorable half — a guest who cannot get online complains at the front desk — but subscriber provisioning and walled-garden billing are the same problem on a residential plant, and they sit next to the headend termination and per-subscriber policy described under Subscriber Edge & Carrier-Grade NAT.
