Cecil Field signal in 3D

Real roof shapes and 178,000 tree crowns at their measured heights from the 2018 USGS LiDAR survey, updated with 2025 imagery, with the EDX SignalPro coverage on the ground. “With shadows” shows what the pine canopy and buildings take away at car height.

Coverage: EDX SignalPro 6.1.1, Anderson 2D, 2 m grid, recovered from EDX's display and calibrated to its own point readings (about ±2 dB). EDX had no buildings and almost no clutter data here, so its result is close to the open-ground ceiling. “With shadows” and the roof sight lines are a separate geometric screen (single knife-edge over roofs, Weissberger foliage loss). Heights and terrain: USGS 3DEP LiDAR, FL Peninsular FDEM Duval, flown Nov 28 to Dec 18, 2018, gridded at 2 m; canopy removed where 2025 imagery shows it cleared; 232 newer buildings added from OpenStreetMap, Microsoft footprints and imagery at assumed heights. Trees have grown since 2018; that growth is not modeled. Tree shapes are symbolic. The study's site coordinate falls on the roof of the building at the center, so the pole is drawn there; a real pole would stand beside it, which does not change the results at this scale.
